ETHICS 5: Spiritual Issues in Clinical Practice (MP3)

OVERALL DESCRIPTION

Many ethical questions arise out of the incorporation of spirituality into one's clinical practice. These range from the appropriateness of prayer in the therapy or counseling session to informed consent between client and therapist about whether and how spiritual/religious issues are discussed. There are two types of ethical theories: "Rule" or "Principle Ethics" and "Virtue Ethics." The most obvious example for clinicians of Rule Ethics is the Code of Ethics of our particular profession.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

This program provides clinicians with the opportunity to:

1. Recognize the difference between "rules" and "virtue" ethics.

2. Deepen their sensitivity to character and virtue, in addition to understanding ethical codes.

3. Clarify issues of self-disclosure regarding one's own spirituality.

4. Critically reflect on their own performance as ethical clinicians.

5. Appreciate the importance of training and compentence when using spirituality.

6. Learn how to evaluate one's own spiritual and ethical beliefs.

Interviews #1 and 2

In these two interviews, we speak with experts on "Rule Ethics" the material included in our professional ethical codes.

1.  Terry Northcut, Ph.D.    ----------   "Handling Ethical Issues"

Dr. Northcut discusses the importance of training and competence in incorporating spiriuality into one's practice.

2.  Frederic Reamer, Ph.D.    -----------   "Ethical Codes and Violations"

Dr. Reamer discusses the one feature common to all codes of ethics: the client's right to self determination. Also covered is the concept of the use of self in ethical practice and adjudication/legal issues arising out of the misuse of spirituality in clinical practice.

Interviews #3 and 4

Virtue Ethics is the theory emphasizing character and virtue. This theory defines certain traits of character which are universally understood to make one a morally good person. These two speakers address the "Virtue Ethics" involved in incorporating spiritual attitudes.

3.  Edward Canda, Ph.D.    -----------   "Spirituality Sensitive Practice"

Dr. Canda defines "Spirituality Sensitive Practice" and emphasizes separating spirituality from clinical practice is impossible and undesirable.

4.  Dennis Haynes, Ph.D.    -----------   "Ethics and Character"

Dr. Haynes points out that most mental health workers make their ethical decisions based on the policies and procedures of their agency, rather than on their own inner sense of what is right and virtuous.
